URTH Zeolite Tech Organiser

INTRODUCTION

We’ve been photographers since the 1980s. Back in the film days, there was little need for a multitude of accessories to carry – it was simply a camera, film, batteries (disposable), wired remote cable release, cleaning cloths & fluid, and blower brush etc. Most of which fitted in our day-to-day backpack camera bag.

Once the age of digital was upon us in the early noughties there was a sudden need for a multitude of extra accessories to be packed such as camera & drone battery chargers & cords, external hard drives, mobile phone chargers, laptop power cords, spare SD/CF memory cards, and spare camera & drone batteries (rechargeable) etc. Most of which do not need to be carried around on a daily basis.

These days, space is usually a premium when packing your bag. You want to be able to pack it as efficiently as possible and try to avoid a bag that erupts accessories when you first open it at your destination. This also applies when you are using a backpack camera bag – if you have the space in your backpack bag it may be more convenient to carry accessories/tech in a dedicated bag/pouch as opposed to using the multitude of pockets that are provided in backpacks these days.

Urth Discount

Tech Organisers have been around for a while and are a practical solution to the number of accessories that are being carried by many photographers these days. In fact, these days, most photographers, especially travel photographers, would require several of these organisers to house all their tech and accessories.

For this review, Urth was kind enough to send us the Zeolite Tech Organiser in onyx (black).

For those that are unfamiliar with the brand URTH, you may remember them as GOBE Filters. The Australian-based company re-branded in late 2020 and expanded its product range to include other practical photography-related products other than just filters. We’ve been using Gobe/Urth products for quite a while now and absolutely love their quality, price, and contribution to the environment through tree planting in some of the most deforested regions of the world.

OVERVIEW

The Urth Zeolite Tech Organiser (Organizer in the North American market) is manufactured with ECONYL®️ which denotes products made from 70% recycled materials that translate to 70% recycled nylon in layman’s terms. In addition to planting trees in some of the most deforested regions of the world, all of their products in the ‘Carry‘ range are made with recycled materials that divert resources from landfill. The tech organiser also features aluminium hardware and gold standard premium-quality YKK zips.

Before you dispose of the recyclable cardboard tags attached to the organiser,  register your product to plant 5 trees in a deforested region of the world. Your unique code is on one of the tags.

TECH ORGANISER EXTERIOR

In appearance, the exterior of the bag is a bit reminiscent of a standard toiletries bag that you take with you when travelling. Its unpacked dimensions are Height – 13cm/5.12in  Width – 23cm/9.05in Depth – 8cm/3.15in (D). It weighs 100g/3.53oz and the interior has a capacity of 2.4 Litres.

The exterior is soft, sleek and clean-looking with no storage pockets which is unfortunate, as it would have been nice to have one zipper pocket for those frequently accessed items. The high-quality YKK zippers extend along the top and both sides of the organiser giving it an ample opening. There are dual zipper pulls with well-sized loops for opening and closing the organiser. The bottom of the organizer has a separate stretchy sewn section that gives the bag more flexibility when storing accessories in the centre section of the organiser. The URTH brand name is elegantly embossed on the organiser in the same colour as the organiser which looks great, in our opinion.

As mentioned in the ‘Overview’ section above, the tech bag is constructed with durable weatherproof* recycled (70%) 600D nylon and uses dual YKK zippers which are the gold standard in zippers and are used on many camera bags these days. Now while it is great to have a weatherproof feature, we feel that this is not an item that will be exposed to the elements. Having said that, every bit of protection for your tech accessories is an added bonus

*Weatherproof (aka water-resistant) – usually the material has a coating that will cause water droplets to bead on the surface giving it added protection, however, it will not make the product impervious to penetration by water. To produce a product that is Waterproof would mean a completely different material thus adding considerable weight to the product. If this is a concern, we suggest you purchase a rain cover for the organiser. You could also try spraying the organiser with a fabric protector, however, we’re not sure how that would react with the material’s current coatings. We could not find any information on their website saying that this would be an issue.

TECH ORGANISER INTERIOR

The organiser’s interior has a multitude of storage areas – 11 in total. Every photographer has different accessories and their own way of storing their gear so our suggestions below are not necessarily the only way you can store items. Needless to say, there are countless ways that you could store items in the organiser. Keep in mind that if you are not carrying around the organiser on a daily basis then there is no point storing frequently used items in the organiser. In our opinion, frequently used items are still better stored in pockets in your camera bag unless you have the room to carry the organiser with you on a daily basis.

The interior of the organiser features the following –

  • One side of the interior contains 4 varying width bottomless pockets and 2 larger 10.5cm/4.13in wide and 7.7cm/3.03in deep pockets. These smaller pockets are perfect for storing power cords without encroaching too much on the larger pockets. The larger pockets could hold larger power cords or spare camera batteries
  • The centre of the organiser has 3 storage areas. The main storage area is a zippered pouch that has extra padding. This area may be ideal for items that need a bit more protection such as an external hard drive or a pair of glasses. The other storage areas are on each side of the main storage area and these are open storage areas without any pockets. These areas are suitable for larger items such as a blower brush, a cleaning kit, or filters rather than smaller items as this would start getting messy. Smaller items such as spare memory cards, a card reader etc would be best suited in the dedicated pockets in the interior
  • The opposite side of the interior has 2 large 10.5cm/4.13cm wide pockets however these pockets are a bit deeper than the other side of the organiser (9cm/3.54in). Another ideal place for items such as circular filters, a spare camera strap etc. Lastly, there is a stretchy band of elastic that allows you to insert a narrow pen. It would not fit our Wacom Tablet pen.

THE FINAL WORD

Technically speaking, the Zeolite Tech Organiser, in name only, is designed to hold all those tech items that are generally used once you are back home or hotel room etc. Items such as laptop chargers, battery chargers etc., which you probably would not carry around with you in the field. However, regardless of what the organiser is called, it can also be utilised as an accessories bag for anything you want to keep together in one bag such as filters, spare camera batteries, spare SD/CF cards, and even film if you are a film shooter. The possibilities are endless as to how you utilise the organiser.

In our experience, we typically only utilize a backpack during travel or in certain situations while out in the field. For this reason, having a tech organizer in our luggage proves to be highly beneficial in terms of storing various tech devices. However, it is not something we would carry around with us on a daily basis.

Urth has once again crafted an exceptional product, and we believe that the Zeolite Tech Organiser will fit the needs of many photographers. Every photographer will utilise an organiser based on their individual requirements, nevertheless, we are confident that most photographers will be satisfied with their decision to purchase this product.

If the Urth Zeolite Tech Organiser does not fit your requirements, check out our review of the Peak Design Tech Pouch.
