Review: Urth Film Pouches

INTRODUCTION

We spent over 30 years using film up until about 2010, when we sold our last film camera – the Fuji G617 Panoramic Camera. These days, we are still shooting a limited amount of film, mainly on vintage cameras such as the Voigtlander Contaflex IV, Zeiss Ikon Contessa LBE, and Zeiss Ikon Nettar 518/16. During our film days, we shot both 35mm and 120 film. As travel photographers, we carried a lot of film and always used a small insulated cooler bag in the field. This small bag worked seamlessly for us over the years, though it was a little bulky.

With the resurgence of film (analogue) photography over the last few years, photographers are once again needing an efficient way to solve the perennial problem of film transportation and organisation.

To meet market demand, in late 2025, Urth released the Mini Film Pouch and Large Film Pouch. These pouches are purpose-built organisational tools that streamline the analogue workflow, ensuring that your precious film rolls are protected from the elements and efficiently separated in the field (large only).

We’ve been reviewing and using Urth products for many years now and absolutely love their quality, price, and contribution to the environment through tree planting in some of the most deforested regions of the world.

Urth kindly provided us with the Mini Film Pouch and Large Film Pouch for this review. Although we received the pouches complimentary, this review is unbiased. Please read our disclaimer at the bottom of this post.

THE MINI FILM POUCH

The pouch has a soft, padded feel and feels aesthetically pleasing. It’s no larger than a small purse, measuring only 140mm (W) x 100mm (H) x 20mm (D) and weighing only 30g. The exterior features a single pocket for any small items; however, the pocket does not seal. A recessed zipper would have been nice, or maybe a magnet. For those who change film mid-roll, this would be a good place to store a Film Leader Retriever.

A sturdy single zipper with a looped zipper pull secures the pouch’s opening. There’s excess material at each end of the zipper, which needs to be held when opening and closing the zipper. It is nearly impossible to open or close the zipper without holding this excess material.

Lastly, a small nylon carabiner loop is located on one side of the pouch, allowing for easy attachment to a larger bag if necessary.

There’s nothing much to write home about inside the pouch. The material used is ripstop nylon. The interior was purely designed to hold up to 4 rolls of 35mm or 120 film. There is no divider like the Large Film Pouch. Needless to say, this pouch is predominantly designed for short-term shoots. For those who want a pouch for travel or long-term shoots, consider the Large Film Pouch.

THE LARGE FILM POUCH

• Significantly larger at 230mm (W) x 230mm (H) x 20mm (D), weighs 110g, and has a capacity of 1L
• Does not have a carabiner loop, so you cannot connect this pouch to another bag
• Has an internal divider to separate exposed and unexposed film

• Relatively Small Capacity: At 0.18L, the Mini will only hold up to 4 rolls. For a larger capacity, try the Large Film Pouch, which has 1L of storage.
• Exterior Pocket: cannot be closed or sealed
• Weatherproof: Not Waterproof
• Colours: Only available in Charcoal (Black); however, this may change in the future.

THE FINAL WORD

The Mini Film Pouch and Large Film Pouch are simplistic products; however, they will be warmly welcomed by analogue/film photographers who want a more organised way to store their film in the field. Yes, the Mini Film Pouch is quite small, holding only up to 4 rolls, but it has only been designed for those who want to shoot a few rolls at a time. Even for long-term travel photography, it would be quite useful as you do not always take all your film out into the field, but instead only what you’d shoot during the day. So, as simple as the product is, it is a practical and helpful accessory for the film photographer.

The Large Film Pouch is simply an upsized version of the Mini Film Pouch (or vice versa) and is ideal for longer trips. It also features an internal divider to separate film. Personally, we think the Mini Film Pouch will be more popular, as it is more suitable for day-to-day use. We anticipate using the Mini more than the Large, but every photographer is different, and the most practical size depends on the volume of film you shoot. Balls in your court!

In our opinion, we think Urth should have released a third film pouch between the Mini and Large. Quite frankly, we believe the Large may be a bit too big for most film photographers. To cater for the majority of the film photographers, we believe the Mini and a Medium may have been a better option.
