Urth Dolomite 8L Camera Sling

INTRODUCTION

A couple of years ago, we reviewed the Urth Dolomite 5.1L Camera Sling bag. In all honesty, we weren’t overly impressed with the bag. Nevertheless, it has been an extremely popular bag among photographers. That’s the thing with any bag – it will suit some people but not others.

We love sling bags, especially for travel and street photography. In our opinion, it is the best option for photographers who frequently change lenses. It is significantly quicker than changing a lens when using a backpack. If you are a photographer who works quickly, then this is the type of bag that will suit your needs.

In September 2025, due to the popularity of the Dolomite 5.1L Camera Sling bag, they released a larger 8L version.

Urth kindly sent us the Dolomite 8L Camera Sling, in the Onyx (Black) colourway, for this review. As per usual, this is an unbiased review of the product. Urth did not pay us for this review. Check out our disclaimer at the bottom of this post.

Honestly, we expected improvements based on what we thought were shortcomings of the 5.1L version of the bag; however, given the 5.1L’s popularity, we guess there was no real reason to change. On first inspection, the 8L is an identical upsized version of the 5.1L bag. So, much of the information in this post is very similar, if not almost identical, to our review of the 5.1L bag. If you like the 5.1L bag but wanted something a little bigger, then read no further, as this is the bag for you.

CAMERA SLING EXTERIOR

The shell is made from durable, weatherproof recycled 600D nylon. While the exterior appears quite resilient to moisture, we still recommend using a rain cover for more protection, especially during heavy downpours. Below, you will find definitions for “weatherproof” and “waterproof.”

The sling features a single zippered entrance at the top, extending the full width of the bag. This is a feature on our Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L V1 bag, and it is a pain to close in the field compared to the dual zipper that they introduced on the V2 of the bag. So, it would have been nice to have on this bag. Nevertheless, the zipper opens smoothly and seals the top of the sling securely. Attached to the zipper is a nylon looped zipper pull, which takes a lot of strain off the zipper and is pretty common on most bags these days.

There is one exterior single-zippered recessed pocket located at the rear of the bag that sits closest to your body when worn. The pocket is wide and deep, giving you heaps of space. It would have been nice to have a couple of smaller pockets within this pocket for small, frequently accessed items such as spare camera batteries, memory cards, wireless remote, etc. Even the interior pocket does not cater for small items. This is a disappointment for the bag, as it indicates that not much thought has gone into what photographers need in the field. This small detail would have made this an awesome bag.

The bag’s base is sturdy enough to keep the sling upright when placed on a flat surface, making it a useful feature that we don’t currently get with our sling bags. Also, unlike the 5.1L version, where the rigidity and shape make it a bit boxy, the 8L is less boxy and more flexible, making it more comfortable when slung around your back. It contours more to your body and feels less like carrying a brick compared to the 5.1L bag. Two thin straps are included with the bag to attach to the external anchor points on the base of the bag to attach a tripod or other items, such as a jacket. These are probably not the most intuitive straps. They can be fiddly to attach and remove, and when loosening and retightening, but ultimately they do the job.

The one thing we would have liked to see on this bag was an exterior carry handle apart from the shoulder strap. Our Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L has a handy handle that also works as a luggage trolley strap. This is a great feature because it provides an alternative way to carry the bag instead of using the shoulder strap. Not a dealbreaker, but it would have been an improvement.

Lastly, the shoulder strap. The adjustable shoulder padding is quite nice and very comfortable. The shoulder strap connects to each side of the bag using the same frustrating connection system as the 5.1L version. When we say frustrating, we are referring to those who may want to connect and reconnect frequently. If you are only connecting once, then your blood pressure will only increase on initial installation. Maybe because we are old farts, but it has been difficult on both bags for us.

*Weatherproof (aka water-resistant) – usually the material has a coating which will cause water droplets to bead on the surface giving it added protection, however, it will not make the bag impervious to penetration by water. To produce a bag that is Waterproof would mean a completely different material thus adding considerable weight to the bag. If this is a concern, we suggest you purchase a rain cover for the bag. You could also try spraying the bag with a fabric protector, however, we’re not sure how that would react with the materials current coatings. We could not find any information on their website saying that this would be an issue.

CAMERA SLING INTERIOR

Similar to the 5.1L version, there’s not much to write about inside the bag. The 8L interior has two Velcro dividers and one zippered pocket. Once again, the zippered pocket is just a single large pocket. As mentioned previously, it would have been nice to have added some smaller compartments in the main compartment so that the user could separate smaller items. Nevertheless,  there is a lot more space for those who were struggling with the size of the 5.1L version.

The interior is designed for someone with a Mirrorless/DSLR camera body with a lens attached and several more lenses. 

Everyone has different lenses and camera bodies, so we can only show you what gear combinations work for us. It is up to you to determine whether the capacity will fit your gear.

The 8L interior capacity is definitely the winner with this bag, as it pretty much carries the same amount of gear that we carry in our Peak Design Everyday 10L sling bag. The only difference is the lack of a tablet sleeve and pockets for smaller items. Considering the price difference, the Urth Dolomite 8L sling is a great alternative to our current bag.

THE FINAL WORD

As mentioned in our introduction, if you like the 5.1L version of the bag, then you will love the 8L bag for the extra space and less boxy design. It will hold much more camera gear for those who like to carry several lenses. Except for some nice features on our current sling bag, the Dolomite 8L bag does come close in functionality. Having said that, there are still a few things lacking with the bag. There are only two pockets, and neither has smaller pockets to hold items such as spare batteries, memory cards, cleaning cloths, etc. As a result, all these reside in a pocket which becomes a messy jumble of bits and pieces. The other issue we have with the bag is the non-inclusion of an exterior handle, making it easy to pick up the bag rather than grab it by the shoulder strap. Lastly, it would have been nice for the entrance to have a double zipper, making it easier to open and close. Naturally, both of these issues may be a negative for us but not for others.

In conclusion, the Urth Dolomite 8L Camera Sling Bag successfully merges security, accessibility, and sustainable design into a compact and stylish package. While its compact size naturally limits its capacity for larger setups, this is a trade-off for the convenience it offers. It is an ideal solution for the minimalist photographer or urban explorer who demands quick access to their gear without the bulk of a traditional backpack. For its intended purpose, the Dolomite delivers exceptional performance and value. It’s currently USD$60 cheaper than our Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L bag, so for those who are looking for a similar sling but without the higher price tag, this bag is probably the closest competitor that we’ve seen.

Would we use the Dolomite 8L Camera Sling bag – yes, we would. It has loads more space than the 5.1L bag and now allows us to carry our camera and lens attached with 3-4 additional lenses. But more importantly, we find that it moulds to the contours of your back much better than the smaller bag. This is a bag we are looking forward to using in the field, although it still does not compete with our current bag for functionality, especially when it comes to storage pockets for small items. Nevertheless, if this is not an issue for you, then this is an excellent sling bag.
