The Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L camera bag

Introduction

We had been planning a trip to Japan and although we have been Professional Travel Photographers for many years we don’t normally travel to the metropolises around the world. Therefore, we were a little concerned about taking our normal camera backpacks to the metropolis of Tokyo and beyond. We still planned to take our backpack bags but wanted a low-profile alternative when visiting the bigger cities, so it needed to be small enough to pack into our checked-in luggage but big enough to carry our essential gear while out and about. This is a big plus for us as the backpack can be a bit of overkill when you venture out and do not want to take every lens with you.

We’ve been using Peak Design products for quite a few years now. We exclusively use Slide camera straps and Shell. We only occasionally use the Capture Clip, a great product that just does not fit into our shooting style, although as of 2020 we do use it in conjunction with the Lens Kit. We’ve been aware of the Everyday Sling Bags and the larger Everyday Backpack for some time, however, we’d never really had the need for the Sling Bag and quite frankly the Everyday Backpack is just not suitable for our shooting needs.

After a visit to a local camera shop to check out our options, it seemed that the Everyday Sling 10L bag pretty much met all our needs. This is a very stylish-looking bag, however stylish means nothing to us unless the bag is really functional and meets all our needs. Check out our blog post about Paul’s search for a new backpack bag! After about 5 minutes of playing with the bag, we knew that this was the perfect bag for our needs and we promptly bought one.

UPDATE: Peak Design Everyday Sling 10L – V2

In late 2019 Peak Design launched new versions of many of its products including the Everyday Sling Bag range. The bag has been re-designed and is available in 3L, 6L and 10L sizes. It is available in Black, Ash & Midnight (Dark Blue). Peak Design was kind enough to send us the 10L V2 bag and you can read our review and comparison between the V1 & V2 bags here.

Features

  • FLEXFOLD (TM) DIVIDERS

2 FlexFold Dividers allow for endless internal configuration, compartmentalizing, and gear stacking. Completely customize the inside of your sling to perfectly meet your carry needs.

  • EXTERNAL CARRY STRAPS

External utility straps for a tripod.

  • TABLET SLEEVE

Dedicated, protected tablet sleeve holds up to 11” tablets and even some small laptops (Max tablet/laptop dimensions: 12.5″x8.65″x.75″ or 32x22x2cm). Please Note: the Sling only has 1 internal sleeve for tablet OR laptop, but not both. It can carry up to a 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina. A laptop may be difficult when the sling is fully packed — we recommend packing your laptop first, then other contents.

  • POCKETS GALORE

A network of small internal pockets organizes and protects all your little stuff.

  • DRONE CARRY

Perfectly sized to fit the DJI Mavic and DJI Spark, with controller and accessories, and give you plenty of room to spare.

  • EXPANDABLE SECONDARY COMPARTMENT

A hugely expandable secondary compartment holds jackets, snacks, and other everyday items. When not in use, it cinches flat, with no baggy or loose fabric.

  • PACKS FLAT

When the sling is empty, the two compression straps can cinch the bag flat so you can easily fit it in a suitcase.

  • CARRY-ON APPROVED

Approved for carry-on by all major airlines. Fits easily under aeroplane seats.

  • LOVES YOUR LUGGAGE

A dual-purpose briefcase and rolling luggage carry strap ensure you’ll always have an easy way to transport the sling.

  • LIGHTNING FAST STRAP

The sling’s strap features a quick adjuster handle that lets you loosen the strap and swivel the bag in front of you in one easy motion.

  • DEDICATED CAPTURE ATTACHMENT

An external attachment point for the Capture Clip (sold separately) lets you rigidly carry your camera on the outside of your sling for instant access.

  • WEATHERPROOF SHELL

A weatherproof 400D nylon canvas shell with high-density padding is DWR impregnated and poly-coated twice on both sides. Premium weatherproof exterior zippers.

  • PREMIUM MATERIALS & BUILD

Hypalon-reinforced and bar-tacked stress points. Soft, durable mixed-cotton twill interior for protection, durability, and a luxurious feel. The Ash Sling replaces Hypalon touchpoints with natural NuBuck leather. All-custom anodized aluminium hardware.

The bag is incredibly well made and well designed. The material looks extremely durable and Peak Design has rated it as “Weatherproof” which means it is made from fabric that is coated with a finish that is resistant but NOT impervious to penetration by water. Therefore, we don’t think it will handle a complete drenching (untested).  The bag has enough interior and exterior pockets to put all your accessories including small pockets for camera batteries, cords etc., and a pocket for a tablet/small laptop.

You also have the ability to carry a small travel tripod which can be strapped to the front of the bag. If you use the Peak Design Travel Tripod, it fits perfectly. For those of you that use the Peak Design Capture Clip, there are handles on both sides of the bag where it can be attached. If you are using the bag as your primary camera bag or as a bag, in general, there’s a nifty handle at the back of the bag which can slip over your luggage handle.

RATED: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Peak Design Everyday Sling Bag

UPDATE: We have just returned from a 3-week visit to Japan. OMG, this bag was absolutely awesome. Our standard backpack bags were used for 2 days out of the entire trip. The bags are so practical and easy to use especially when changing lenses. The only downside was not being able to fit our 100x100mm filter bag with our holder, ND’s & Grads. Having said that we barely used them on the trip but when we did, they easily fitted once the camera was out of the bag. Unlike a landscape photographer, we tend to have our camera out as soon as we leave our accommodation so this was only a minor issue. In addition, the filter bag can also attach to the outside of the bag if necessary. Most days we walked in excess of 15kms and one day we did 24kms and the only pain we had were our throbbing feet. Do yourself a favour and check out this bag.
