INTRODUCTION

A few months ago, we reviewed the Bagsmart Soar 6L Sling Bag and were pleasantly surprised. We even often use the bag instead of other, much pricier bags that we own.

If you’ve read any previous posts, you’ll know we are huge fans of sling bags for our daily use and travel photography. These types of bags perfectly suit our needs as we have minimised the items we carry.

If you’re a minimalist photographer who shoots travel, street, or even astrophotography, consider using a sling bag. They’re less bulky and quicker to access in the field than a backpack. However, your choice should depend on how much gear you carry. If you frequently carry 5 or 6 lenses, a sling bag, especially this one, may not be suitable for you. Nevertheless, if you want to just head out with a camera and lens rather than lugging all your gear, then a cheap secondary minimalist bag could be the answer for you.

The Bagsmart Paz 4L Camera Sling Bag was recently released and is aimed at minimalist female photographers. They kindly sent us the bag in the Tiramasu colourway for this review (see our disclaimer below).

BAG EXTERIOR

The shell of the bag is made with soft nylon wave-quilted water-repellent fabric, which is a bit reminiscent of a warm puffer jacket. The material gives the impression of coziness. If it were human-sized, it’s the sort of bag that makes you want to crawl inside and snuggle up on a cold winter’s night. It almost gives you a comforting feeling knowing that your gear is lying snuggly and secure inside, if that makes sense.

At the rear of the bag is an anti-theft recessed single-zipped pocket that extends almost the full width of the bag and is about 10cm deep. It has a cord zip-pull for easy access. The interior of the pocket is lined with bright orange cotton fabric, which you’ll also find in the interior, making it hi-vis and easier to find items. This pocket, being the closest to your body, is ideal for valuables or a mobile phone.

The front of the bag has another pocket, but not as wide as the rear pocket, and no zipper, making it ideal for small, frequently accessed items. Even though there is no zipper for this pocket, the lid of the bag extends in front of this pocket when closed and once the clip is joined, it makes the pockets pretty secure and weatherproof.

There are also 8cm wide pockets on each side of the bag for quick access items such as snacks, suntan lotion, etc. There’s also a pocket for a pen adjacent to the side pockets, although the stitching on these pockets looks a little suspect, as we can see exposed stitching along the seam of this pocket.

The base of the bag has two removable straps for attaching a tripod, although due to the width of the bag, it would have to be a very small tripod. Our compact Peak Design Travel Tripods are almost twice the width of the bag. It would work well with our Silence Corner Mambapod, a very handy table-top tripod that also clamps onto surfaces. If you don’t carry a tripod, you could use the straps to carry a water bottle, jacket, jumper, etc.

All the exterior hardware, such as buckles, is made of hardened plastic. The plastic seems quite robust; however, only time will tell how strong it really is. The buckle at the front of the bag connects smoothly, and the excess strap can be cinched to tighten the lid on the bag. 

The fully adjustable 3.8cm wide shoulder strap is well-made with thickened PU leather at each end, reinforcing the strap connections for added durability and strength.

In addition, there’s a small single-zippered removable case that attaches to a fixed plastic D Ring on the strap. A further aluminium D Ring is used to connect the case to the plastic D Ring. The aluminium D Ring allows you to remove this case if not needed, or you could mount the case on any other buckle on the bag if you don’t want it dangling from the shoulder strap. The case is tiny and although Bagsmart suggest that this tiny case is good for storing  SD cards or a Flash drive, etc, anything stored here will move around. It would have been nice to have some small interior pockets on each side of the interior to keep the contents, such as SD Cards and Flash Drives more secure in the case. Also, a repetitive use of the Bagsmart logo is probably unnecessary, as this is already displayed on the side of the bag. Personally, we think the branding needs to be a little more subtle, as the logo emblazoned everywhere on such a small product just cheapens the look. Having said that, this has no relevance towards the practicality or functionality of the bag.

That’s it for the exterior of the bag. Let’s now take a look inside where all the magic happens.

BAG INTERIOR

The Bagsmart Paz 4L Camera Sling Bag is compact, but the bag will not fit our Sony A7Riii with the 24-105 f/4 lens attached, which is our standard walkaround setup. This combination will only work if the camera and lens are stored separately in the bag. Unfortunately, photographers, especially street photographers, do not shoot this way. Nevertheless, it does fit with a small prime such as the Samyang AF 35mm f/2.8 lens attached, and there’s even enough room for one more lens. As far as space for gear is concerned, this bag will be more ideal for 35mm film photographers and those who shoot with smaller cameras such as APS-C, Micro Four Thirds, and Compact models such as the Sony RX100 series. We realise that this bag has not been designed to cater for photographers like us, but if you love street photography and use a camera with a single prime lens, then there is ample space in the interior.

To open the bag, just unclip the main buckle at the front. The interior is lined with the same bright orange fabric as the exterior pockets. On the underside of the lid is a single-zippered rectangular-shaped mesh pocket that is quite wide (18cm x 9cm). It has a material zip-pull making it easy to open and close. This pocket could be used for photographic accessories such as spare batteries, cables, or circular filters.

The entrance to the main compartment is secured by a double-zippered fabric partition. These zippers feature cord zipper pulls instead of fabric.

At the rear of the main compartment is yet another single-zippered mesh pocket, similar to the pocket on the underside of the lid. The zipper uses a fabric zip-pull. The pocket extends the width of the bag and is quite deep. Inside the pocket are 3 equal-sized small mesh pockets. These are perfect spots for spare SD Cards, a Wireless Remote Control or any other small items. Bagsmart suggests that these small pockets could be used for spare batteries; however, just be aware that these could protrude into the main compartment, making it more difficult to fit your camera. This will work for some people but not others. If it impedes the space in the main compartment, we suggest you store them in the pocket under the lid or the small case attached to the shoulder strap.

Similar to the Bagsmart Soar 6L Sling bag, there’s an adjustable, non-removable padded divider that separates items in the main compartment. This easily folds out of the way if you do not want to use it.

That’s it for the interior. Considering the size of the bag, there are ample pockets in the interior, and it is extremely well-padded. But, how much will it fit? This, obviously, will vary from user to user, as everyone carries different cameras and accessories, but for the average street photographer that carries minimal gear, the interior will be more than enough.

The BagSmart Paz 4L Camera Sling Bag is available in Ether (Aqua with a Red Strap), Green Moss (Khaki with an Aqua Strap), Reflecting Pond (Navy Blue with a Yellow Strap), or Tiramisu (Brown with an Aqua Strap). We were sent the Tiramisu colourway for the review.

THE FINAL WORD

The Bagsmart Paz 4L Camera Sling is a compact solution for photographers and travellers wanting quick access, comfort, and a low-profile design. While it may not suit many users with some DSLR or Mirrorless systems, or those needing extensive storage, its smart organisation, lightweight build, and sleek aesthetics make it a reasonable choice for on-the-go shooters.

The Paz 4L is a good option if you want a minimalist, functional, and comfortable camera sling that blends into daily life.

Would we use the Bagsmart Paz 4L Camera Sling Bag? Probably not for our mirrorless digital gear, as the bag is just too small for us unless we are not going to use our 24-105mm lens, however, if we plan to use just a couple of prime lenses such as the Samyang 35mm f/1.8, 18mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.8 or Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 then we would use this bag. Alternatively, we occasionally shoot with vintage film cameras with fixed lenses, and the Bagsmart Paz 4L Camera Sling bag works perfectly with these cameras.

All in all, it’s not a bad offering from Bagsmart. It’s probably not the best quality 4L sling bag on the market; however, you get a lot of bang for your buck, and for those on a budget, this could be the perfect bag.
