As part of our processing workflow, we use Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop and a range of plug-ins and other software to achieve the best results. Here are some of the software we use and recommend.

Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop

Our starting point for all our images is Adobe Lightroom. This is a fantastic piece of software that we use to catalogue and start our editing processes. It is simple to use and has many features that allow you to be creative with your editing. With so many plug-ins available within Lightroom (check out the other software listed below) it handles all our requirements. The creative cloud version includes Lightroom (Classic & CC versions) and Photoshop at a reasonable monthly price of AU$14.29 / US$9.99.

ON1 Software

It works as a plug-in for Lightroom & Photoshop but also as a standalone which is awesome if you do not have either of the these. No subscription is required and is available for both Mac & Windows. The new ON1 Photo Raw is a must have and at the heart of the software lies Develop & Effects which includes everything you could possibly need for creating the look you want. The hundreds of filters and presets are stackable, allowing for endless creativity. Make sure you check the minimum computer requirements for the software before purchasing. Click here to check it out.

Aurora HDR 2019 and Luminar 3

These are also very useful editing software apps which work as stand-alone products or plug-ins. Aurora HDR 2019 is the best HDR software currently available on the market. It’s a one-stop-shop for HDR shooters who want to align, blend and stylise in one application. You can order the 2019 version which has even more great features over the 2018 version at a great price.  Click here to order Aurora HDR 2019. Upgrade prices are also available if you have previous versions. Luminar 3 with libraries is a great photo editing software app for Mac and PC. Fast and powerful, and features Accent, the world’s first AI-powered photo filter. Luminar 3 makes complex image editing ultra-easy, helping you create the most beautiful pictures in seconds. Click here to order Luminar 3 and use “WIDESCENES” in the coupon code at checkout for a further discount or enter your details in the banner below to get a FREE 30-day trial.

Topaz Labs

Another suite of plug-ins that we use quite a lot and highly recommend. Awesome image enhancement plug-in software. We currently use Studio, Detail, Clarity, Clean, DeNoise, Glow, ReStyle, Simplify, Texture Effects, Adjust, InFocus, Lens Effects, B&W Effects, ReMask, AI Gigapixel, Sharpen AI and JPEG to RAW AI. Topaz Studio is a FREE download and is a simple to use editing platform with Topaz Labs’ powerful acclaimed photo enhancement technology. It works as a standalone editor, a plugin within Lightroom and Photoshop, as well as a host application for your other Topaz plugins. Click here to view their full range of products. In the meantime check out our blog posts on some of their products. Click here to view posts.

We are an affiliate with HdrSoft who make Photomatix Pro software, another very good HDR software application on the market. If you are not experienced at manually blending images using layers in Photoshop then this is a great alternative. This software is suitable for those that simply want to align the images and give minor tweeks to the image. Any further editing or stylising can be done in Lightroom, Photoshop, ON1, Topaz or any other editing software. To purchase the software click here and use ‘widescenes‘ in the coupon code box and you will receive a 15% discount. This will save you about AUD$20.00.

Peak Design

A great range of camera bags, clips, straps, and covers. Click here to see their full range. We currently use the Slide camera strap, Shell waterproof camera cover, and the Everyday Sling 10L camera bag. The Everyday Sling Bag is great for Travel Photographers and was invaluable during our 2018 trips to Japan, Hong Kong, Macau & Shanghai. Check out our blog post here.

Freelander Tripod

When we travel and need a lightweight tripod that is sturdy and can support our camera/lenses we use the Freelander Carbon Fibre C-820 tripod. They are great compact tripods that are reasonably priced especially considering the height they stand (162cm), are carbon fibre and can convert to a monopod as well. Many of the popular brands that have carbon fibre tripods in the market range between $400.00-$1000.00. Click here to order.

GOBE Filters

We always use UV filters on our expensive lenses. We may remove them when we shoot but they are usually always on the lens. In the past, we have used Hoya filters until we discovered GOBE filters. Not only do they make fantastic UV, CPL and ND filters but they are also pro-active in helping the environment. They use minimal recyclable packaging and funds from every product sold are contributing to the planting of 5 trees in areas of severe deforestation throughout the world. If you use the coupon code WideScenes at checkout you can save a further 15% on their products.  Click here to order.

Miggo camera bags & accessories

These wonderful weatherproof camera bags are available via this link. Receive a 15% discount (delivery within Australia only) on all products by using the code WIDEANDDRY at checkout. Click here to order.

We made the switch from Nikon to Sony in 2015 and we have not looked back since. The A7 range of full-frame mirrorless bodies are fantastic. We have used the A7R & A7ii camera bodies and now both use the A7rii. They offer some great benefits for what we do over DSLR’s on the market. We also have the Sony a6000 that is a great crop sensor (x1.5) camera that gives us that extra focal length on our Sony 70-200 f4 lens. Click here to visit the site and see their full range of cameras and lenses.

NIK Software

This is a fantastic suite of products which includes Analog Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro, HDR Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, Dfine, Viveza and Sharpener Pro. We use Sharpener Pro as our main image sharpening tool. Several years ago Google bought the company. Unfortunately, they were not particularly interested in future development of the Nik suite of products. DXO eventually took control and have now released the software again. Manfrotto Tripods

When weight is not a restriction and you need a solid, heavy duty tripods, we use the Manfrotto 055B tripod with a 168 ball and socket head. This beast wont budge and is still going strong after 25 years of use. We also have the 190XB with a 496RC2 Ball Head. A great tripod as well but we rarely use it these days as we prefer the weight of  the Carbon Fibre Freelander tripod mentioned above.

Great bags!!! Over the years we have used the Mini-Trekker, Transit Backpack 350AW and the Passport Sling bag and they have never let us down. Although Paul now uses a Vanguard Alta Rise 45 he still has a soft spot for the Lowepro range of bags. We always suggest that you take your gear to a local supplier and test your gear in the bag before buying. This is essential to ensure that it fits all your gear and that it is comfortable to carry fully loaded.

Joby GorillaPod

A great little tripod which is an excellent alternative when it is difficult to use a conventional tripod. We originally bought a Joby GorillaPod to try and get it into the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul as we knew we couldn’t use a conventional tripod. Unfortunately, we still didn’t get it past security but nevertheless, it has been a fantastic little tripod and has allowed us to shoot in some awkward places where a conventional tripod just wasn’t practical.

Joby also makes the fantastic Pro Sling Strap. We initially used this strap however over time we found the Peak Design Slide strap to be better for our needs.
