Peak Design Roller Pro Carry-on Bag

Not long ago, we reviewed the Peak Design Outdoor Backpack 25L and Peak Design Outdoor Backpack 45L, both of which are brilliant bags, but in our opinion, are more suitable for the outdoor adventurer rather than photographers.

Up until 2025, Peak Design hadn’t really ventured into the traditional travel baggage sector. Although many of their bags could be used for travel, they were all backpacks, slings, duffels, etc. As with most of their new products, a Kickstarter campaign was launched for the Roller Pro Carry-on Bag in March 2025 with a release date of June 2025. This would be their first roller bag and their first real foray into the traditional luggage arena.

Our first impression is WOW. This is a classy-looking bag that meets all the carry-on size requirements for the majority of airlines; however, as with other carry-on-compliant roller bags we have reviewed, this is a heavy bag. This may be great for residents in the USA, where most airlines do not have weight restrictions for carry-on bags, but not great for us here in Australia, with both size and weight restrictions. At 3.9 kg unpacked, this bag does not allow for a lot of packed items when some airlines only offer 7 kg restrictions. Nevertheless, we understand that it is extremely difficult to design a roller bag that would be much lighter, so it is what it is.

ROLLER PRO – EXTERIOR

The Hybrid Shell & Versa Shell™ Fabric

The bag features a smart hybrid construction. It is built around a rigid polycarbonate frame that offers the impact protection of a hardshell suitcase, but is wrapped in Peak Design’s proprietary Versa Shell™ 500D nylon canvas*. This 100% recycled, Bluesign-approved material is tightly woven and treated with a PFAS-free weatherproofing coating to repel rain and stains. The fabric provides a touch of exterior padding and subtle “give,” allowing you to compress the bag slightly when jam-packing it. All the zippers on the bag are #8 UltraZips (a collaboration between Peak Design and Zoom Zippers), which is consistent with most of Peak Design’s bags these days.  

* This is a little confusing as the Specs section on the Peak Design website and the tag on the bag both mention 500D, but at the bottom of the product page under the “Hybrid Shell Design” heading, it reads 550D. We would assume that this is a typo.

Telescopic Trolley

Moving away from bulky aluminium tubes, the bag features a single thin (6.9mm) 2-setting (90.5cm & 100cm) telescopic extender constructed from 3K-weave carbon fibre, making it sturdy yet lightweight. The handle has a rigid anodised aluminium grip and a clickable deploy button. The trolley moves extremely smoothly when being deployed. Whereas many bags with a telescopic handle have two tubular moving sections when extending, the Roller Pro has only a single extension, making it more rigid with less wobble when it is fully packed.

Ultra-Smooth 60mm Wheels & 360° Handling

The Roller Pro rides on custom wheels on all four corners. Equipped with high-grade, near-frictionless internal bearings, the bag glides effortlessly on smooth airport terminal floors—often requiring just a single nudge to roll along beside you.

Other Exterior Features

For lifting and stowing, heavy-duty low-profile grab handles are stitched onto all four sides of the bag. No matter how the bag ends up in an overhead bin or car trunk, there is always a handle ready to grab. The top and side handles are a little more expandable than the bottom handle, and this makes sense, as this is probably the least used handle, and the closest to the ground when rolling.

The bag also has 12 gear loops – 4 on the top, and on both sides of the bag. These are ideal for lashing additional items to the bag. Inside the bag are 2 cord hooks that can be used to lash items. Just be aware that this could infringe on the dimensions of the bag for carry-on purposes. It’s probably best to utilise these at your destination. On one side of the bag, you will also find a 13cm x 2.5cm x .2cm Hypalon* luggage tag.

*Hypalon is a high-performance synthetic rubber that is resistant to extreme temperatures, UV radiation, weathering, and harsh chemicals.

On the rear of the bag are two short vertically aligned burn rails (also known as skid or glide rails) and much smaller ones on either side of the trolley handle. These rails protect the bag from friction, tearing, and general wear and tear when you lay it flat on the ground. As these are pretty short, we think they are mostly designed for protection when pulling the bag up curbs or stairs. 

Lastly, the exterior has a zip to expand the bag. As mentioned above, we do not recommend using this feature if the bag is used as a carry-on, as it may infringe on the airline’s stipulated bag dimensions. The expansion will increase the internal storage volume by 5L – from 34L to 39L, and the depth to 28cm, which is deeper than many airlines allow for carry-on.

ROLLER PRO – INTERIOR

The exterior of the bag is pretty cool, but a lot of the magic happens on the inside of this bag. Probably the most significant feature is the adjustable drawbridge opening, which converts the bag into “workstation mode” as coined by Peak Design. This amazing feature is now appearing in a few bags to reduce the bag’s footprint when opened. It allows the lid to be self-supporting when propped open at roughly 90 degrees. In tight hotel rooms, small studios, or on set, you can leave the bag fully open on a luggage rack or chair without hogging valuable floor space. If, for some reason, you do not want to use the drawbridge opening, it can easily be disconnected.

The first thing you will notice when opening the bag is how little the carbon fibre SlimDrive trolley tubes ingress into the interior. Because tubes are incredibly flat, they do not create the massive, awkward structural ridges at the bottom of the interior that usually plague rolling luggage with cylindrical (round) trolley tubes. The interior floor is nearly flat and lined with a premium-quality felt material. This design allows you to lay garments or camera gear flat against the bottom without wasting dead space.

The interior is dual-purpose designed – for photographers and non-photographers. The bag is designed for photographers to use Camera Cubes; however, the X-Large Camera Cube was specifically designed for this bag. Naturally, it depends on how much gear you have, which will determine the size you use. When purchasing a Camera Cube, it includes multiple clips that can be fed through both the loops on the Camera Cube and the loops inside of the bag.

Just to give you an idea of setups: the X-Large Camera Cube is ideal for those who want the bag to be a dedicated camera setup and not much else. The Large Camera Cube fills the width perfectly but leaves a small buffer of open space at the very top of the main compartment. The Medium, Smedium, Small, and X-Small Camera Cubes are great if you want to mix, match, or stack the smaller cubes side-by-side or vertically to create a hybrid setup. 

Using these Camera Cubes allows more room for clothes, shoes and other items. Unlike other bags where the loops are exposed, the loops in this bag can be conveniently tucked away in a small pocket beneath each loop. If you are not using a Camera Cube, we suggest you leave all 8 loops (3 on each side and 2 at the top of the interior) tucked away in their pockets (see left).

In each corner and midway on each side are reinforced nylon gear loops. These loops are positioned to accommodate the adjustable internal retention system (compression straps). When not in use, most bag compression straps dangle loosely on each side of the bag, and if you pack the bag with items on top of these, you have to dig them out. This is not an issue with this bag, as there are no dangling straps. The stretchy ultra-high-strength Cord Hook system will keep your items secure and, when not in use, will blend seamlessly along the sides of the interior. The gear loops can also be used for other attachments, such as a Tech Pouch. To adjust the tension of the cord, depress the button on the cord at the base of the interior and slide. This should make it easier to connect each hook.

There are no pockets in the main compartment. It is wholly dedicated to maximising space for packing. It is designed for you to customise the bag exactly how you want it. If you are a photographer, consider configuring the interior with a camera cube, tech pouch, packing cubes, and other items. Regardless of whether you are a photographer or not, you can configure the interior however you wish. We highly recommend the Peak Design Packing Cubes to get the most out of the interior and to keep your items neat, tidy, and organised. For pockets and additional space, keep reading.

The Interior Lid

The underside of the interior lid has a dual-zippered separator that has 3 horizontal, equally sized, single-zippered clear pockets. There’s heaps of room in these pockets, but beware placing bulky items as this will infringe on the main compartment when closing the bag.  Alternatively, if you are not utilising the pockets, the zippers could be fully unzipped. You can then roll the pockets towards the base and secure them in place with a cord hook, giving you more depth in the main compartment (see below). The dual zippers can also be unzipped slightly to reveal an additional storage cavity. Within this cavity are two hidden pockets – at the bottom is a small concealed pocket that can accommodate an AirTag, and behind the flap that hangs down from the top of the cavity labelled “No Two Trips The Same” is the other.

SPECIFICATIONS

The external dimensions of the Roller Pro are:

Unexpanded: 55.6cm x 35.6cm x 23cm (21.8″ x 14″ x 9″)
Expanded: 55.6cm x 35.6cm x 28cm (21.8″ x 14″ x 11″)

So, as you can see, the Unexpanded dimensions will meet most airlines’ size restrictions worldwide, but once expanded, it won’t.

Weight: 3.9kg (8.6 lb)

This is a negative for us, though many will not see it as a problem. As mentioned in the introduction, the bag’s weight will not let you pack much for carry-on travel on many airlines. Unless you purchase extra carry-on weight, you will have only 3.1 – 6.1 kg of packing space, depending on the airline. Most US airlines don’t have weight restrictions on carry-on baggage, so there’s no need to worry if you plan to use this bag for domestic travel in the US. Here in Australia, many airlines enforce the 7 kg carry-on limit. Nevertheless, this is not a fault of the Roller Pro but rather a problem with stingy (miserly, tightfisted, parsimonious, and penny-pinching) airlines.

PRO & CONS

If you’ve read any of our other Peak Design reviews, we may sound like a broken record as there isn’t, in our opinion, anything to dislike about this bag except the price, but even that shouldn’t deter you from considering this bag.

THE FINAL WORD

The Peak Design Roller Pro Carry-on Bag is an incredibly polished piece of travel engineering. While its premium price tag and 3.9 kg weight may give casual weekend travellers pause, it is an outstanding hybrid solution for creative professionals, digital nomads, and frequent flyers. By optimising internal space, refining transit maneuverability, and seamlessly integrating with camera cube protection, Peak Design has built a genuinely versatile, high-end travel companion.

By swapping out standard, space-hogging aluminium trolley tubes for an ultra-thin carbon fibre system, they cleared out the annoying interior ridges that plague typical suitcases. Combined with the stylish felt lining and integrated cord loops, the interior layout maximises usable volume—making it the absolute perfect home for their form-fitting XL Camera Cube or Packing Cubes.

For creative professionals, designers, and travel photographers who require a seamless, on-the-go workflow, the Roller Pro is an exceptional investment. If you already utilise Peak Design’s packing ecosystem, this bag ties it all together beautifully—maximising every square inch of space while doubling as a highly efficient, mobile gear station on location. Its unmatched space efficiency makes it a premier tool for anyone whose livelihood depends on travelling with high-end gear.

If you are a casual traveller simply looking for a dependable carry-on suitcase, the premium price tag and hefty empty weight make this a tough sell over standard luggage, although the Lifetime Warranty of the Roller Pro is a bonus when you take into account the lifespan of a cheaper bag.

In all honesty, we can’t find much fault with the Peak Design Roller Pro Carry-on. Would we use it? You bet we would, but only when we can confidently travel within the airline’s weight restrictions. Aside from airline travel, the Roller Pro is a great bag for long weekends away or domestic road trips, especially if you want to combine minimal camera gear and clothes all in one bag.

All in all, we think that the Roller Pro is a definite winner, with the only exceptions being the weight and price. If these are not an issue for you, you’ll be as happy as a clam at high tide with your purchase.
