Review – Mambapod by Silence Corner

INTRODUCTION

We’ve mentioned in other posts how much we hate carrying around tripods, and it wasn’t until we received the Peak Design Travel Tripods that we begrudgingly began to take a tripod with us most of the time in the field. Nevertheless, anyone who does travel photography will know that a tripod is not always practical and sometimes impossible to set up due to space restrictions.

Previously, we reviewed the Atoll by Silence Corner, an impressive gadget now permanently attached to our cameras. Once attached, the Atoll allows the camera to rotate from horizontal to vertical without removing it from the tripod. This was a popular product, and copies quickly followed the release of the Atoll.

In late 2024, Silence Corner launched their latest photography accessory on Kickstarter, which we expect will be even more popular – the Mambapod. It quickly reached the funding amount. For this reason, we expect this will be a well-sought-after product for many photographers.

After some research, we found that this is not the first gadget that allows you to clamp your camera to poles and posts, however, this is the only product we found that will also act as a tabletop tripod.

Silence Corner kindly sent us a sample of the Mambapod before release, however, we have not been paid for this review.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX?

The Mambapod arrives boxed as per the image at the top of this post. Inside the box are the following items –

1. 1 x Mambapod
2. 1 x Ball Head
3. 1 x Mambapod Carry Bag
4.  A ziplock bag containing two different-sized Allen Keys and spare bolts
5. 1 x Silence Corner sticker

There is no instruction book, however, the instructions can be found on the exterior of the box. It’s pretty easy to work out how the Mambapod operates. There is, however, an instructions booklet in the Ball Head box.

The Mambapod is constructed with aluminium, steel, and rubber. It feels extremely robust. It has been magnificently designed and engineered into a slimline and compact product. Once you add the ball head to the top of the Mambapod, it could easily fit inside a jacket pocket.

The only thing we do not like is the oversized Carry Bag. This would have been much nicer if it had been a snug fit. As a result, we would probably prefer to carry the Mambapod without the bag.

WHEN WOULD YOU USE THE MAMBAPOD?

The Mambapod was specifically designed for those who want a robust tabletop tripod that can also clamp to objects such as poles and flat surfaces when space is a premium. Although the Mambapod can replace your tripod in many cases, it certainly does not replace the need to carry a tripod. We see this product being carried in addition to your current tripod and would be best used when there is limited space available to set up your tripod. Needless to say, the Mambapod is only beneficial when there is a flat surface or object to attach to.

There are countless possibilities for using the Mambapod and not just for still cameras. Action cameras such as an Insta 360 camera or a GoPro can easily be mounted on the Mambapod. For those who like to shoot light trails, the Mambapod would be particularly useful. In many cases, it is difficult to position a tripod in a position that captures long exposure light trails. As long as there is a suitable surface, such as a pole or guard rail, this should be a lot easier using the Mambapod. Vloggers will also find the Mambapod invaluable, especially in areas where they cannot set up a tripod and do not want to handhold the camera. In a nutshell, the Mambapod is essentially suitable for any photography genre, limited only by the availability of appropriate surfaces that can be used at the location.

HOW TO USE THE MAMBAPOD

Firstly, attach the tripod ball head supplied in the small box with the Mambapod. The ball head features degree markings at the base and a small spirit level on the clamp, enabling you to easily level the camera. While most digital cameras today come with built-in spirit levels, not everyone shoots digital, making this a welcome feature.

The ball head has 3 knobs/latches. The bottom one, when loosened, controls the rotation of the ball head. The centre latch allows you to position the ball head. If the latch, once tightened, protrudes at a 45-degree angle, you can adjust the latch by pulling it out and rotating it to a more suitable position if necessary. Lastly, the top knob tightens the Arca Swiss plate (included) that attaches to the camera. You will not need to use the Arca-Swiss plate if you use an L-bracket or Silence Corner Atoll on your camera. The base screw of the ball head is 3/8″, however, if you want to use your own ball head and it has a smaller 1/4″ thread, you can reverse the base screw by using the smallest of the supplied Allen Keys.

The top knob tightens the plate; the middle lever controls the ball head; and the bottom knob controls the rotation. The lever can be adjusted by pulling out and rotating it if the body of the ball head obstructs it.

After adjusting to the desired position, re-tighten the lever. The thinner legs can be adjusted in the same manner, but you only need to pull out the clip. When extended, these legs do not lock into place, and you do not need to pull out the clips again to collapse the legs inwards. These thinner legs each have three 1/4″ threaded screw holes giving you the option of attaching fill lights, smartphones, or other devices (see image above).

Extend the leg and push the clip back in and tighten the lever. Alternatively, rather than pulling out the clip, you can also push the clip from behind the leg.

The Mambapod can clamp onto a round surface with a diameter of 20-80mm and onto a flat surface up to 85mm wide. Please note that the load capacity when clamping to horizontal surfaces is 5 kg, but when clamping to a vertical surface, the load capacity should not exceed 2 kg. Therefore, if you are shooting with a long telephoto lens where the combined weight of the lens and camera body exceeds 2kg, we would recommend you only use the Mambapod on horizontal surfaces. We have tested the Mambapod attached to a vertical surface with our heaviest lens, a Sony 70-200 f/4 G attached (see image below), and it was fine, although this weight fell well below the 2kg limit. So, unless you shoot with very long telephoto lenses, the majority of camera and lens combinations will work well in this orientation.

To clamp the Mambapod onto a round surface, firstly release the latch at the bottom of the leg, then extend the two clamping arms at the rear of the thickest leg, then rotate the clamping arms so that the end section faces outwards. Hook the top clamping arm over the round surface. Make sure you keep this clamping arm against the surface while tightening. To tighten the clamp, rotate the latch at the bottom of the leg in an anti-clockwise direction. The bottom clamping arm will start to move upwards until it reaches the round surface you are clamping to. Once tight, you can move the ball head to the desired position. To remove, simply rotate the latch clockwise.

To clamp onto a flat surface, follow the same procedures as above, but rotate the end of the clamping arms so that they face inwards instead.

When finished, ensure the clamp is wound back as far as possible, otherwise there will not be enough room to fold down the clamping arms. Fold the two clamping arms inward. Finally, push the latch at the bottom back into its locked position.

Note: When attaching the Mambapod to a surface, ensure that the surface does not vibrate due to external factors such as people or traffic. For example, if mounted to a fence that other people (especially kids) lean on could cause vibrations which may lead to movement in your images.

It is connected to the ball head using the Silence Corner Atoll S+, which is permanently attached to our cameras. When using the Atoll, you may have to slide it slightly back in the clamp so that the camera body clears the ball head when rotating the camera from horizontal to vertical orientation. The total weight is 1.4kg, and it is rock solid.

POSITIVES (+)

• One of the great benefits of this product is its size. It is so compact and relatively light (310g) that you will want to carry it with you all the time.
• Well designed and engineered. This is a solid product made from premium materials.
• Not limited to just stills cameras
• Works seamlessly with the Silence Corner Atoll product, which makes it an awesome combination.
• Clamps to both round and square objects up to 85mm. It remains rock solid in both orientations as long as the weight limits are not exceeded.
• Can be used as a sturdy tabletop tripod
• A multi-purpose product for vloggers
• Can be used with the Silence Corner Ball Head or your own Ball Head
• Reasonably priced, although with all the stupidity of tariffs being implemented at the time of writing, we’re not sure how cheap this product will be for buyers from the USA

NEGATIVES (-)

There’s not much we don’t like about the Silence Corner Mambapod, based on what it has been designed for. However, no product is perfect for everyone, so here are some of the negatives, which may or may not be negatives for everyone.

• As mentioned, the one thing that could have been done better is the size of the supplied carry bag. A more slimline carry bag would have been better.
• Unlike a dedicated tripod, you are limited to the attachment surfaces, if any, available in a given location.
• There are a lot of moving parts on the Mambapod, so in the long term, these may wear or break.
• The Ball Head does not lock into place and could be accidentally loosened
• Limited load when attached to vertical surfaces (2kg). This would possibly exclude a combination, for example, a Sony A7Riii + 70-200 f/2.8 GM lens, which has a combined weight of just over 2kg (untested)
• Only 12 months warranty

Silence Corner has once again delivered a fantastic product that, in our opinion, should be in most photographers’ bags. The Mambapod is slim, light and multi-functional. The Mambapod, in our opinion, is an essential product for photographers in situations where they cannot always enjoy the luxury of setting up a standard tripod due to space limitations. However, we recommend carrying the Mambapod in addition to a standard tripod, as a standard tripod offers much greater flexibility for composition. We also strongly recommend using the Mambapod in conjunction with the Silence Corner Atoll (or similar) due to its added stability benefits.

UPDATE

We have just returned from a 6-week trip to Greece & Italy (May/June 2025) and naturally took the Mambapod with us. As expected, the Mambapod was invaluable as a sturdy tabletop tripod; however, as mentioned in the Negatives above, we found we were limited by the number of suitable surfaces available to attach the clamp to, in places where we wanted to take photos. Nevertheless, it was utilised on many occasions when possible, where a tripod was impractical.
