GOBE Filter Kits + Discount Code

We’ve been using Gobe Filters for quite a while now and absolutely love their quality, price, and contribution to the environment through tree planting in some of the most deforested regions of the world.

In addition to their range of individual circular screw-in filters, and their recently released square ND filters (filter holder and grads coming soon), Gobe also produces some very practical filter kits which are particularly useful for photographers that are just starting their photographic journey. For those that love film, especially black and white film photography, there are kits that will fulfil all your creative needs.

In this post, we will highlight all the different filter kits available and what the filters are best used for.

Just a couple of things to keep in mind before purchasing the filter kits –

  • If the filter kit already includes a UV filter and you own several lenses then you will need to purchase extra UV filters in addition to the filter kit. Although it is a good idea to use a step-up ring for speciality filters such as C-PL (circular polarizer) filters, or ND (neutral density) filters, we suggest you purchase a UV filter for each lens you own.
  • It may not be practical to purchase a filter kit for every lens thread you have. If you own several lenses with different threads then we suggest you purchase a cheap step-up adapter ring to fit your largest thread size. This way you will be able to use the larger filter on all your lenses. e.g. if your largest thread size is 77mm then purchase the 77mm filter kit and a step-up adapter ring if your other lens has 72mm thread.
  • When using circular screw-in filters try not to stack them in front of the lens on wide-angle lenses e.g. if attaching a C-PL (circular polarizer) filter first remove any other circular screw-in filter attached to the lens. If unavoidable, check to see if the stacked filters are causing significant vignetting in the corners. Most of the Gobe filters are slim so you may be OK.

Peaks?

There are currently 11 different Gobe filter kits available. Importantly, there are 3 quality levels of filters – 1 Peak, 2 Peak, and 3 Peak. All offer great quality at different degrees with the 3 Peak being the highest quality (one kit at this level). Choose the range according to your budget.

1 Peak – made from quality Japanese glass and coated with an 12-layer nano-coating for truer light transmittance, better protection, and easier cleaning. They have an ultra-slim rim to avoid vignetting and durability that’s guaranteed for life. The filters are double-threaded for stacking filters (although not recommended) or for storing in the screw-mount lens caps.

2 Peak – made from premium Japanese glass and coated with a 16-layer nano-coating for truer light transmittance, better protection, and easier cleaning. They have an ultra-slim rim to avoid vignetting and durability that’s guaranteed for life. The filters are double-threaded for stacking filters (although not recommended in our opinion) or for storing in the screw-mount lens caps.

3 Peak – made from premium German SCHOTT B270 glass (see image below) and coated with a 16-layer nano-coating for better sharpness, added protection, and easier cleaning. They have an ultra-slim rim to avoid vignetting and durability that’s guaranteed for life. The filters are double-threaded for stacking filters (although not recommended in our opinion) or for storing in the screw-mount lens caps.

GOBE CPL Filter

All filter kits also include a Microfibre Cleaning Cloth (below right) and Lens Filter Metal Caps (below left) that connect to both ends of the filters making it a secure and compact way to carry all your Gobe filters. Best thing since sliced bread in our opinion laughing

The GOBE ND Family Filter Kit contains 3 Neutral Density filters with density strengths of ND4 (2 stop), ND16 (4 stops), ND32 (5 stops).

This kit is an ideal starter and ideal for those that want ND filters but don’t want the long exposures that the ND64 and ND1000 provide. These ND strengths will allow you to use wider apertures in daylight for shallower depth of field.  Alternatively, if you are shooting video, these filters are useful for maintaining a consistent shutter speed at a required aperture with fixed lighting. For inconsistent lighting a Variable ND Filter may be more practical.

Gobe ND Stopper Filter Kit

GOBE ND STOPPER FILTER KIT
1 Peak & 2 Peak

The GOBE ND Stopper Filter Kit contains 3 Neutral Density filters with density strengths of ND8 (3 stop), ND64 (6 stops), ND1000 (10 stops).

Thread sizes: 37mm – 95mm
Price: 1 Peak – AUD$71.00 – $286.00 or 2 Peak AUD$75.00 – $350.00

This kit is an ideal starter for those that want the ND filters primarily for slower shutter speeds during the daylight hours (ND1000) and sunrise and sunset shots (ND64). The ND8 is also useful as a transition filter once the exposures become too long when using the ND64. This kit comes in both 1 Peak and 2 Peak qualities.

Gobe Basics Filter Kit - 1 Peak

GOBE BASICS FILTER KIT
1 Peak

The GOBE Basics Filter Kit contains 6 filters – a UV filter, C-PL (Circular Polarizer), ND64 (6 stop) Neutral Density filter, Graduated Red filter, Graduated Orange filter, Graduated Blue filter.

Thread sizes: 37mm – 86mm
Price: AUD$82.00 – $219.00

Check prices in your region –
AUS $ – UK £  – CA $ – USA $ – EU €

Use coupon code ‘widescenes‘ at checkout to receive a further 15% off this kit (or any Gobe product)

This kit is an ideal starter kit and is a bit of a mixed bag.

  • UV filter is a protective filter for your lens
  • C-PL (circular polarizer) is a useful filter for reducing reflections, darkening blue skies, and enhancing foliage.
  • ND64 (6 stop) neutral density filter is great for long exposures, especially at sunrise and sunset
  • Graduated Red* filter is used in black and white photography. It darkens blues colours, turns red colours to white and lightens warm colours. As this is graduated it will only affect half the scene. This is a great filter for black and white landscapes – just place the graduated half of the filter where the sky meets the horizon to improve the contrast of the sky.
  • Graduated Orange* filter is also used in black and white photography. It darkens blues and lightens warm colours and is for graduated light conditions. We used this filter quite often back in the film days when shooting black and white to increase contrast.
  • Graduated Blue* filter is also used in black and white photography. It lightens blues, turns red to black and darkens warm colours and is for graduated light conditions.

*TIP – When using these filters you will need to attach them to the front of the lens and position the camera relative to where you want the graduation to commence.

Normally, to obtain starbursts, you would need to shoot at small apertures such as f/11-f/16 (depending on the lens) and the number of points on the star would be determined by the number of blades of your lens aperture. Using these filters allow you to shoot at larger apertures while still attaining 4, 6, or 8 points on your starbursts.

  • 4-star filter produces 4 points on strong, close sources of light.
  • 6-star filter produces 6 points on strong, close sources of light.
  • 8-star filter produces 8 points on strong, close sources of light.

CONCLUSION

Gobe Filter Kits are a great way to get all the filters at once rather than paying for individual filters. Many of the filters for black and white are only available in the kits and cannot be bought individually anyway. We use Gobe Filters on practically all our lenses and we currently own the Gobe Duet Filter Kit – 3 Peak and all have performed beyond our expectations compared to other brands.
